The “Lover’s Eye” is a tradition of secret devotion and mourning made popular in the late 18th century. Unlike portraiture which plainly depicts a person’s likeness, the single eye is a more intimate expression conveying deep emotions for its recipient. Mesmerizing and bizarre these floating eyes gaze upon their viewer making them feel seen while the art’s subject forever remains unknown .
This practice of encoding secret messages for loved ones is what inspired me to breathe new life into the tradition. Often it is easier to share a part of oneself through a sideways glance, a pinched brow, or a heavy lid, than to put those feelings into words.
